Rose Red clothespin paper flower wreath

Hi guys! This is my latest clothespin wreath. I had collected some really pretty scrapbook paper in aquas and reds and they sparked the idea for this wreath's theme.
Also, I remember when I was little going to my grandparent's church for a dinner and walking in the kitchen to see Gramma who was in there with a bunch of other ladies..all in dresses and aprons! I must have been young because they were tall. I remember perusing the buffet table with my cousin Greg, deciding what we were going to eat when time came. Two things I remember making an impression were macaroni salad with marshmallows and fruit cocktail and whipped cream in a big white Fire King bowl with red dots and a huge angelfood cake with sticky pale pink marshmallow frosting. I have since collected and been gifted a set (and a couple more) of those Fire King nesting bowls..some of my favorite items! (Thanks again Debbie!)
So here are the red dots and the pale pink!
The red roses I made from cardstock.
The pale pink rosebuds are made from cupcake liners because it was the only pale pink paper I had in the house that day! I like how they turned out.
The rest of the flowers have layers of vintage and antique sheet music (Mozart), vintage French lit pages, vintage French to English dictionary pages, vintage Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice pages (I always read as I snip!) and antique German bible study book pages. The middles are vintage mother of pearl buttons and pearly jewelry beads and bits with touches of pink glitter. I just could not hold back the glitter on this one!
The leaves are aqua paper encrusted with crystal glitter. I have a different one that I am working on flowers for now..different scheme of course. I will share it when it is done.
These are the flowers my daughter's boyfriend picked for her and left in her car while she was at work this weekend. Awwwww! My husband said he needs to tell him he is setting a bad example! I told him that is how it is SUPPOSED to be! LOL. Hope your week is filled with flowers! Til next time! Julia

French text Paper Roses

Hi guys! I made these last night while sitting and waiting for my 8 yr old at baseball practice..well mostly. I had the leaves already done and I finished the stems this morning! I have a hard time sitting and doing nothing!
I made these out of pages of a French to English dictionary . The leaves are green Monopoly money!
These can be a clip or a pin..or a magnet too. I plan to take some to my antiques booth and put some in my Etsy shop. I never know which way to take things so I am "divide and concurring"! These would be good on a lapel, on a lampshade, decorative pillow..you name it! I have some more tin chalkboard trays in the works so maybe a magnet for one of those? I am actually home alone today.. a very rare day. Off to projects! Have a great day and stop back! Julia

Somerset Life's Newsprint Challenge

Hi guys! This is part two of my submissions to Somerset Life magazine. I showed my tart tin ornaments yesterday. This challenge was for items made from newspaper. I make a lot of paper flowers and roses so this was a good fit for me. I love making roses out of alternative paper. I have used maps, monopoly money, dictionary pages, sheet music..newspaper was not a big leap! I never really noticed how much color is in your average newspaper. I sorted my petal shapes into piles according to their color, black and white for some and the more colorful ad pages for others.
I varied the sizes of the roses also.
Then I arranged them on a cardboard ring shape until I had a pleasing arrangement. Then out came the glue gun.
I alternated colorful ones with black and white and little ones next to big.
I felt it needed leaves and I thought since it was already an unconventional wreath, that black leaves would look sharp. I gave them white "stitch lines" with a white gel pen to give them a bit of extra "pop". It seemed modern yet old fashioned at the same time if that makes any sense!
It is funny what different light and background can do to a photo. This was on my dining room wall..I like the direct sunlight shot better, it's much clearer.
I also made a paper bloom out of the comics, sports section and sudoku section.
I added vintage buttons to the center and black leaves to this also. This has a pinback, but could also easily have a clip back or magnet depending on where you wanted to use it. I have made similar blooms to these in my Etsy shop before. I love layering vintage papers of all sorts. I am into Dr. Seuss-like flowers! The wreath was sort of a first, now I need to make some for my shop. Here's to unconventionality! Hope you have a great day! Til next time! Julia

Laundry Day OR Washing Vintage Linens

Hi guys! I got quite a few vintage fabric pieces this weekend. A couple had spots so I thought I share my spot removing process. First, soak overnight in your presoak of choice NO BLEACH. You could use Biz or Oxy..I just use Tide and warm water. Yes..that is my impossibly green bathtub..When we bought our house we called it "The Brady Bunch House" miles of shag carpeting and green and gold everything! I have gotten used to the tub since removal would be a headache and until we do an entire bathroom remodel, I have a granny smith apple green bathtub! ..but I digress *ahem*. Step 1: Soak your linens overnight before washing. Most old linens are cotton and cotton dries out and becomes fragile over time. Soaking rehydrates the fibers and makes it strong enough to stand up to a trip through the washer( usually..there are the occasional dry rotted pieces that just disappoint!)
Step 2. The next morning run it through the wash NO BLEACH... BLEACH IS EVIL TO OLD FIBERS! and take it outside and spread it out to dry on the dewy morning grass. Obviously my technique does not work for me in the cold months! Green grass is a must and sunshine. The sun was still lollygagging this morning, but the weatherman said it was supposed to show its face today! The sun shines down, the dew evaporates through the damp cloth and the cholorophyll in the grass also adds to the spot removal process. This is an OLD, effective process! You do have to take your chances with low flying birds and curious pets and in my case, nosy peacocks but worst case scenario..you rewash!
I looooove vintage floral tablecloths!
This one is my fav..it has a mend on one edge but I love the roses!
I love roses on anything! I got a couple more of these tablecloths, but the other ones were spot free.
So pretty!
This is the yardage... a huge honking piece. It had some overall grunge...faboo print! Wouldn't this make a cool wedding aisle runner? The heck with boring white, instant rose strewn path!
This is my idea of a "yellow brick road"... I'd follow it anywhere! I have tooons of stuff to take pix of today. I hope to get some pix of my "treasures" from the weekend up on here soon..maybe later today! Hope your day is rose covered! Til next time! Julia

My vintage Map Paper Roses

Hi! I have been making these for awhile. I learned to make roses when I was a teenager, making them for my cousins wedding. She had 8 attendants who all carried baskets of flowers, her flowers, altar flowers, groom and groomsmen, flowers for the hall..My mom and aunts and I made bushels of flowers! I reused those skills to make these. The idea came to me one night while I was TRYING to sleep. That's when my brain usually goes to overdrive! I like the pastel colors of the old maps..buttermint, sherbet-y shades. This is a full blown rose I am working on. Still need to add a leaf and calyx.
These are some boutonnieres I just finished for a wedding. The groom's flower has a crystal beaded heart encircling 2 larger beads (bride and groom). You can sort of see it upside down at the bottom of this pic.

A close up. I have some more vintage paper flowers I am working on for another person's bouquet. Those are a different style and made of sheet music..when I am done I will share here! I hope everything is coming up roses for you today! Til next time! Julia
